About – The Region of the Ionian Islands comprises of large and small islands, scattered off the western coastline of mainland Greece and the Peloponnese. The region is one of Europe’s most popular destinations, attracting about three million visitors every year, representing more than 10 tourists for every inhabitant.
Food & Drink – The Ionian Islands, or the Heptanese, are nothing if not privileged. With fertile soil, plenty of rain and just the right amount of humidity, anything you plant here takes root and grows. This arability shaped the islands’ rural customs as well as their cuisine, but they were also influenced by the Western powers that held sway here, particularly the Venetians. The Ionian Islands are noted for their production of regional wine varieties, vegetables, olive oil, citrus fruit, honey, various dairy and cheese products and traditional sweets. The region is known for its local cuisine, which blends Italian and other foreign influences with Greek cooking.
Tourism – The Ionian islands are known as a greener, more temperate version of the Greek mainland and Aegean islands and each island has its own particular allure. The deep, sapphire-like, crystal waters of the Ionian Sea make every visit to these islands an unforgettable experience.
Trivia – One of the Ionian islands, Zakynthos, is the world known habitat of the Mediterranean sea turtle caretta-caretta.
